Summary

This study developed a vaccine candidate against the multidrug-resistant bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major cause of hospital-acquired pneumonia. The vaccine consists of bacterial outer membrane vesicles coated onto nanoparticles that activate the STING immune pathway. In mice, a single low dose induced strong antibody responses and fully protected against lethal pneumonia, with antibodies also protecting against a different bacterial strain. The findings support a nanoparticle-based vaccine platform that could be applied to other difficult-to-treat pathogens.
