Summary

This review discusses the potential of macrophage membrane-camouflaged nanoparticles (MMNPs) as emerging therapeutics for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). It explains that MMNPs, by retaining surface proteins from donor macrophages, can evade immune clearance, target inflamed liver tissue, and modulate inflammatory and fibrotic pathways. The article highlights the role of macrophages in MASLD progression and how MMNPs can sequester pro-inflammatory cytokines, promote anti-inflammatory macrophage polarization, and deliver therapeutic payloads to specific liver cells such as hepatocytes, Kupffer cells, and hepatic stellate cells. The significance lies in addressing limitations of current MASLD treatments, such as poor pharmacokinetics and off-target toxicity, by providing a multifunctional platform for targeted therapy.
