Biohybrid nanoparticles for treating arthritis
Nature Nanotechnology2023Vol. 181387-1388
Summary
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition causing joint inflammation and pain. Current treatments often fail to address underlying immune dysfunction and have side effects. A new study in Nature Nanotechnology reports biohybrid nanoparticles (Ce-MSCNVs) that combine ceria nanoparticles (scavenge reactive oxygen species for symptom relief) with mesenchymal stem cell nanovesicles (provide immunomodulatory and chondroprotective effects). In a mouse model, intra-articular injection reduced swelling, pain, and tissue damage, and restored immune tolerance by shifting macrophage and T-cell phenotypes. This dual-action approach addresses both short-term symptoms and long-term immune normalization, representing a promising strategy for RA treatment.
